For Individuals

Trip Permits

Trip permits are needed when you have an unlicensed vehicle that you need to operate on public highways for vehicles with expired tabs.

To obtain a permit, you just need to go to a vehicle licensing office and request the permit, along with payment. Permits for vehicles are limited to 3 in a 30-day period; permits for RV’s are limited to 2 in a 1-year period.

Military Personnel

You can get a temporary vehicle permit, if you buy a vehicle while serving as a nonresident military personnel.

To obtain a permit, please submit:

This permit will allow you to use the vehicle in WA while you apply for out-of-state registration. It is valid for 45 days and must be displayed on the vehicle, so it is visible from the outside.

ATV's/ORV's Temporary Permits

You have the option to purchase a temporary use permit if you don’t want to license your vehicle for a full year. To qualify, you must have your title for a full year, before applying for a permit. The permit is not for road use.

To get a permit, bring your payment to our office and request it. Permits are good for 60 days from the date of issue.

Did you know?

Each trip permit is valid for 3 consecutive days, beginning with the first day of use.
Any correction or alteration of data on the permit invalidates it.

For Commercial vehicles

Trip Permits

WA state commercial trip permits authorize the use of a single commercial vehicles at the maximum weight limit for 3 consecutive days. They are limited to 3 permits in a 30-day period. To obtain one, bring payment to our office with your request.

Fuel Permits

Commercial vehicles entering Washington State, that do not pay fuel under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and who have 2 axels with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds, or 3  or more axels, or a combination of vehicles with a combined GVW over 26,000 must get a Fuel Permit. Fuel Permits are good for 3 consecutive days. To obtain one, bring payment to our office with your request.
